Microdermabrasion is the process of using micro crystal to scrape away the top dead layer of skin to reveal newer fresh skin. Professional treatments by medical offices or spas will use this technique to remove surface skin, reduce pore size, decrease darkened pigment, lessen sun spots or sun damage, decrease fine lines and wrinkles, lessen the appearance of scars and control some forms of acne. The technique requires the use of gentle mechanical abrasion by the application of pressure, crystals to buff away the dead layer of skin and suction take the layer away.
Traditional microdermabrasion crystals can be zinc, sodium or aluminum. These tiny grains are passed through a wand which is drawn over the face with light pressure. The action is similar to the method of dermabrasion; however microdermabrasion is safer and gentle enough to do once a week. Skin surfaces are enhanced because the procedure enables cells to renew more easily, leaving skin visibly and touchably smoother, brighter and more refreshed. Multiple treatments will reduce pore size, erase fine lines and decrease stretch marks and age spots. Collagen and elastin fibers are stimulated to rebuild and regenerate themselves increasing skins’ firmness. And for some the signs of aging begin to reverse.
Microdermabrasion is not limited to one form. Crystal microdermabrasion enlists micro crystals to help blast away the top layer of skin causing exfoliation. Diamond microdermabrasion functions without crystals. The exfoliation occurs as the tip of the wand (or handle) makes contact with the skin and the dead cells are removed with vacuum suction. Home versions of microdermabrasion are also available. These treatments not as powerful and the results are not as dramatic as a professional grade treatment. However, adequate results can be produced over time.
The process is quick and painless and no recovery time is required. Cosmetics can be applied immediately afterward. Immediate results can be seen, restoring the natural glow of the skin. For simple skin imperfections, this treatment can often be as effective as some of the laser and surgical procedures, keeping in mind several sessions are needed to see dramatic changes. One session takes from 10-45 minutes. Most people are red for several hours afterward. 10-12 sessions spaced 1-2 weeks apart and then a maintenance plan monthly or bimonthly is often the protocol. Professional microdermabrasion costs range from $75 - $250 per session. |
