Scars develop as a result of damage to the skin and surrounding tissues. They can appear anywhere on the body were trauma has occurred. Microdermabrasion is a useful tool to help reduce the appearance of scarred tissue. Microdermabrasion uses a scraping and suction technique to exfoliate the top layer of skin. As the process buffs away the epidermal dead cells, the vacuum suction assists in stimulating the collagen layers below the surface of the skin. The now stimulated collagen accelerates its production to strengthen the dermal layer and flatten out the tissue.
Microdermabrasion will help to soften the look of superficial skin irregularities of scarred tissue especially for shallow minor scars. There is minimal risk and rapid recovery time. Deep chemical peels or laser skin resurfacing is more effective on more aggressive forms of scars as they will penetrate into the thicker layers of skin. It is not advisable to have microdermabrasion performed on scars that are fairly new.
Consult with your cosmetic professional or dermatologist to determine the right course of treatment to reduce or eliminate a scar. |
